Before You Move In – Some Projects to Consider

Moving to a new residence is hardly ever relaxing.  While tackling even a modest renovation project may seem like the last thing you'd like to do before you unpack, completing some work in your new home right away can save you time and trouble in the long run.

Here are some pre-move in projects to consider:

Electrical Upgrades - These upgrades can be done anytime, but an electrician (being paid by the hour) will be able to work faster in an empty room.  Older homes may need ground fault interrupters in kitchens and bathrooms, as well as additional outlets.  Other features to think about installing include: ceiling fans, reading spotlights over the bed, a motion-activated ceiling light in a basement or laundry room, track lighting for hallways, or an outlet by the mantle for holiday lights.

Re-Keying Locks - Getting new locks or re-keying existing locks is a prudent security measure, and great for peace of mind.

Flooring and/or Carpeting - This can be a major undertaking, but installation will be much easier without having to move all your furniture.  Order flooring or carpeting well before your move and arrange to have it installed the day before you move in.  You may wish to have existing hardwood floors refurbished before moving your furniture in.

Painting - Whether you do the work yourself or hire someone to do it, it's a lot easier to paint an empty room.  Allow several days to repaint before the movers arrive.

Storage in the Garage - Now may be the time to install storage shelves, finish the floor with an epoxy coating, or install a workbench, before the garage is stacked to the ceiling with various belongings.

Closet Systems - Why not live out of suitcases for a couple of days while accessories such as specialized shelving for more efficient closets can be installed?

Crown Moulding - You may wish to install crown moulding around the whole house all at once, before you move in.  Pre-paint the strips of moulding before installation, just before painting interior walls, to speed the project.

Take care not to tackle too many projects at once.  Yet even completing just a few of these renovations before you fully move in will increase your enjoyment of your new home right from the start.
